Mechanism of the injury which can be categorised as blunt, penetrating and blast. Blast injuries are not included in this version of the model since the model is developed from civilian data where blast injuries are rare. Classification of the mechanism and energy of injuries is described in the "Injury Classification" link below.

    The mechanism and energy of injuries are classified as shown below: 1) Penetrating – High velocity a)High velocity gun (rifle) b)Close range shotgun wound 2) Penetrating – Low velocity a)Stabbing b)Handgun 3) Blunt trauma – High velocity a)Fall from height > 20 ft / 3 floors / 6 meters b)Ejected from vehicle c)Trapped under vehicle (train / bus / car) d)RTC: mechanical entrapment / death of occupant / major intrusion into passenger compartment e)Pedestrian vs. vehicle > 30mph f)Crush 4) Blunt trauma - Low velocity a) Low energy blunt trauma injuries, excluding the conditions above. 5) Blast: There were no blast injuries in the development cohort of the ATC BN. Blast injuries are classified as high energy blunt injuries when using the model.
