This book gives a rounded introduction to the complex field of ubiquitous computing in one volume. It describes how current technology models based upon mobile wireless networks, service-oriented computing, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence, context-awareness, autonomous systems, micro-electromechanical systems, sensors, embedded systems, controllers and robots, can be applied to, and can evolve to, support a vision of ubiquitous computing and computing for the future.

A novel holistic framework is proposed for UbiCom called the Smart DEI (Devices, Environments and Interaction) model. It is based upon three interlinked system viewpoints in terms of: Internal UbiCom system properties: distributed, iHCI (implicit HCI), context-aware, intelligent, autonomous. System interaction in three distinct external environments: ICT or virtual computing, physical world and human world. Distinct design architectures: smart devices, smart environments and smart interaction.
