Research
I'm a member of the Information
Retrieval Group and the Interaction, Media and
Communication Research Group. I also have strong links with the Open and Distance Learning Unit.
Research interests
My research interests lie in two areas, and the intersection between
them:
- user-centred aspects of information seeking, information
retrieval (IR) and structured document retrieval (SDR), including:
- information seeking behaviour (searching and browsing) in
structured documents
- the concept of relevance in information retrieval
- evaluation of interactive IR systems, particularly task-centred
evaluation
- the application of human-computer interaction (HCI) principles
and techniques to IR
- interface and presentation issues
- user-centred aspects of distance learning, including:
- the constructivist approach to distance learning
- design frameworks for virtual learning environments (VLEs)
- evaluation frameworks for VLEs
- communication and collaboration
- cross-cultural factors
- information seeking and retrieval for distance learning,
including:
- use of online information sources and resources, and
information seeking behaviour of distance learners
- multi-media IR techniques for distance learning
Research approach
My work is definitely "multi-disciplinary", and also draws on these
other areas:
- information science
- HCI
- experimental psychology
- cognitive science
- educational theory
