  • [April 2013] Call for paper in a special issue on "Base Station Antennas for small cell or large-scale multiple-antenna systems", for the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation (Hindawi Publications, 2013. With the advance development of next generation mobile systems, for example, 3GPP long-term evolution (LTE), the deployment of such systems plays an important role to increase and maximize the data rate exchange and user coverage. Therefore, small cell and large-scale multiple-antenna system deployments have attracted enormous attentions from both academia and industry. The base station antennas naturally become the key to deploy either of these systems. A typical base station has several transceivers allowing operation in several different frequencies and different directions of the cell in the system. Several research works are being conducted on various antennas used in base station for UHF/VHF, CDMA, GSM, 3G, 4G, and futuristic 5G. A comprehensive passive or active antenna system that meets the standard requirements in terms of the beamforming, gain, polarization, and patterns for effective enhancement of performance is required. This call for papers aims to have papers with feasible and great potential antenna designs for the base station in a small cell (e.g., a femtocell) or large-scale multiple-antenna systems. Research work licensed to companies

  • A novel single feed compact stacked patch antenna with three frequencies in the L-Band was licensed to SSBV Space & Ground Systems Ltd in March 2012. The antenna has been embedded on the CubeSat ADCS  (Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem) experiment in right figure below. (This is figure is taken Figure 10 from the news). CubeSat ADCS is integrated to TechDemoSat-1 (or simply TDS-1) which demonstrates the advanced capabilities of state-of-the-art small satellite technology for scientific and commercial applications. TDS-1 is launched by Soyuz rocket in Kazakhstan in July 2014.

  • A patent filed in 2008 on  “Apparatus and Method for Detecting Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted by a Device,” European Patent Application No. 08100712.2, X. Chen, Y. Gao, L. Guo and J. Dupuy. The device was used by Sony-Ericsson.
  • Investigations for on-body Bluetooth link between a mobile handset and a Bluetooth headset were explored. The work was supported by Sony-Ericsson. Both numerical modeling and measurements were carried out and the importance of surface waves in the on-body Bluetooth transmission was identified. The work provided an important guideline to Sony-Ericson for the Bluetooth headset antenna design in 2009.
