The Computer Science Department is inviting industrial speakers to come and give Careers Talks to all undergraduate and msc students. All 3rd year students are expected to attend. The talks will provide you with an insight into your future as Computer Scientists in different industrial sectors.

Sept 30 - Intelligent job hunting - 

Find out what you should be doing to increase the chances of getting a job. Learn strategies and techniques that will put you ahead of other graduates who just rely on waiting for vacancies.

Ursula Martin is a Professor of Computing at Queen Mary, where she is Director of Research.  Apart from short periods  in industrial research labs in the UK and the US she hasn't left University (yet). She will talk about what computing research involves,  careers in academic  and industrial research,  getting started on a research career by doing a Masters or a PhD, and answer all those questions you never liked to ask, like what  academics do in the vacation, or what is the point of learning more and more about less and less........

This talk discusses what it is like to work within a smaller company or freelance, and why you should consider it as an alternative to a large corporation. It covers what sorts of skills small companies need and what you can expect to get out of such a job.

Oct 28 - Computing in medicine and the biological science: a career that gets you out of bed -
Medicine and the biological sciences are now increasingly relying on sophisticated technology and computing techniques. The traditional boundaries between computer science and the life sciences are blurring, and there is an ever-increasing need for people who can combine the two fields. The talk will discuss the challenges and rewards to following interdisciplinary career paths in medicine and biology

For those with a background in technology but interested in careers in the legal domain, intellectual property is likely to be the most attractive area of law to consider. Career options (in particular, barrister, solicitor and patent agent) in this area will be compared and the different qualification routes indicated.

 - Starting a Business -   THIS TALK WILL BE GIVEN IN JANUARY
Philip Shipperlee has a business career spanning almost 30 years. Most of this time has been spent starting, building and then selling two businesses in leading edge technology solutions. During the talk Philip will share his experience and some of the many lessons that he has learnt about creating and building successful businesses.  He says "although one hour is a very short time, I will send people away with a basic formula for starting and building a business of their own."
