SeeGEDCOMX - Requirements

Quite a lot of effort has gone into checking at run-time that particular system software is present. It ought not to crash on any system, and if it does I'd appreciate a bug report, including a crash log if you know how to collect one.

System Versions

SeeGEDCOMX is designed for MacOS X. Some features require at least 10.1.5. In time, more and more of its functionality will depend on your having an up-to-date copy of MacOS X. I simply don't have time to try to make every new feature work on older systems.

Nevertheless, SeeGEDCOMX 0.8 also runs on MacOS 9 with CarbonLib 1.6 from Apple, but this configuration has had almost no testing.

There is an old version, 0.4a3, available from the downloads page, designed for MacOS 7.1 to 9.2, though you'd probably be better off with CarbonLib and v0.8 on anything newer than MacOS 8. If you would like SeeGEDCOMX v0.8 packaged for MacOS 9 or earlier, please contact me.

Apple's free FileMerge program can be used for before-and-after comparisons of a GEDCOM file (screenshot). SeeGEDCOMX understands, and preserves, Macintosh, Unix (Linux) and DOS (Windows) GEDCOM files (they differ in line-endings). If you want to use FileMerge, you must use Unix line-endings in your GEDCOMs, or FileMerge will crash horribly. FileMerge is part of Apple's Developer Tools, but it's not just a tool for programmers, despite this frailty.

The Developer Tools can be downloaded from Apple's web site, or you may have received a copy with your MacOS X CDs.
