1 NOTE Joan Clarke reports that she heard (from Laura or Bertha) that Robert
2 CONT was born in Barrhead, near Glasgow, but it hasn't been possible to confirm this.
2 CONT In the book Rambles Round Glasgow by Hugh McDonald, 1852, a James McCulloch Esq.
2 CONT is described as living in a "handsome mansion" called Trees, near Barrhead.
2 CONT This seems a bit grand for what we know of the McCullochs.

2 CONT There is no record of Robert's birth in the IGI, and none that I can see in
2 CONT the indexes to the Scottish Old Parish Registers. Maybe he was born
2 CONT into a Nonconformist family, and they refused to register him with the
2 CONT Church of Scotland. The reason to believe that his parents are the
2 CONT Gavin McCulloch and Mary Stewart born in Glasgow are: we know that his parents
2 CONT were Gavin and Mary, and we know Gavin was born in 1808, that Robert had a sister
2 CONT Mary Anna, and an uncle John McCulloch born in Scotland in about 1816,
2 CONT and finally that Gavin was an engineer. Mary Anna's birth certificate tells
2 CONT us that her mother's maiden name was Stewart (own name in Scotland -
2 CONT women didn't/don't take their husband's names).
2 CONT All this fits in with the Glasgow McCullochs, who were smiths;
2 CONT there are no other Gavin McCullochs in the IGI at all.
2 CONT There are no other McCulloch engineers or similar in Liverpool, except for
2 CONT a boiler-maker called Peter. In Glasgow the firm of Moses McCulloch & Co. in
2 CONT Gallowgate were
2 CONT iron founders, fender makers, and from about 1840, engine-makers. I can't find
2 CONT any connection between these other McCullochs and this family.
2 CONT
2 CONT Robert Vance McC is given as plain Robert, Engineer, age 18 in the 1861 census.
2 CONT At his marriage on 12 Oct 1865 (Liverpool Registry Office) he is a Shipbuilder,
2 CONT age 22. In the 1881 Census he is 38, a Marine Draughtsman.
2 CONT When his daughter Bertha married in 1900, he was a plain Draughtsman.
2 CONT In his will, he called himself a Retired Naval Architect. According to his
2 CONT obituary, he worked for Lairds (which later became Cammell Lairds) for fifty years.
2 CONT I think Jean and Graham Sim have two drawing of his, of ships that he worked on.
2 CONT
2 CONT His middle name is variously recorded as Van, Vans, and Vance.
2 CONT There was a fairly flourishing Vance family in Glasgow at the
2 CONT beginning of the 19th Century, though they aren't obviously related.
2 CONT However, we have other examples of local surnames being used in a
2 CONT similar fashion: Tassie and Lennox are also Glasgow families; and
2 CONT one of the several Robert Vances of the period was an exact contemporary
2 CONT of Robert's grandfather, born 18th June 1784 in Glasgow.

2 CONT He was choirmaster at the Methodist Seaforth Mission (Gladstone Rd?) where
2 CONT several of his children were in the choir. He conducted the Messiah at the
2 CONT Gordon Institute when he was 70; that would be 1913.
2 CONT After he lost his job he pretended to go to out to work still. There was no money
2 CONT for a headstone when Carrie died (probably 1924) (JC).

2 CONT JC has said that Robert died after Carrie, as Bertha did some of the nursing (?)
2 CONT and that Kenneth and Alan were of secondary school age during his final illness.
2 CONT Robert's "effects" seem to have been worth about £320 (Will proved 1926, with
2 CONT Bertha as executor and sole beneficiary).
2 CONT An obituary in the Crosby Herald, 20 Nov 1926, confirms nearly all the family
2 CONT traditions.

2 CONT The 1881 census, & tradition, gave us 6 daughters. Tradition
2 CONT included Polly and Bessie, the census gave us Mary and
2 CONT Elizabeth which seem reasonable equivalents. But in the
2 CONT obit., Mrs E Donaldson doesn't fit at all, Minnie has the
2 CONT wrong husband, and Minnie and Jessie are not in age order.
2 CONT Maybe Joan Bretherton was born Joan Coward, and married a
2 CONT Bretherton herself? Maybe Minnie wasn't there, and M.Coward
2 CONT is another daughter who wasn't on the 1881 census for some
2 CONT reason? (But then, why no flowers from the
2 CONT ones-who-may-be-Cowards?) JC thinks Minnie married twice,
2 CONT Coward being her first husband, but since there are flowers
2 CONT from Minnie, Eric & Joan this doesn't quite add up.

2 CONT The photocopy is poor - Mrs M.Coward may be Mrs McCoward.

2 CONT Maybe the obit has the sons in age order:

2 CONT The 1881 census has Robert N. McC age 6 mo., while the 1891
2 CONT census has Norman McC age 10. St Caths indexes confirm
2 CONT Robert N. was Robert Norman, which seems enough to confirm
2 CONT they're the same boy. The censuses and St Caths indexes also
2 CONT confirm J McC as Jack Stewart and Douglas as Douglas Gavin.

2 CONT April 1846 and April 1847, and the place of birth is given as Hampshire.

2 CONT Dictionaries of first names say Carrie is short for Caroline
2 CONT (although sometimes it is from other Car- names), and
2 CONT there are no Carrie Andrews births in the Registry index between March

2 CONT There is only one Caroline Andrews born in Hampshire in the full period,
2 CONT and she was born in Stockbridge. The entry is in the index for September
2 CONT 1847, which is rather late - she would not have been 34 until September 1881.
2 CONT It seems necessary to look for some other derivation of Carrie in our case.

2 CONT Carrie's address on her marriage certificate is Netherfields Rd North, Everton
2 CONT (no street number). An Eliza. Powell was living at 250
2 CONT Netherfield Rd at the time of the 1861 census: then age 30, husband Benj. Powell,
2 CONT Ship Broker, age 36. They had one house servant.
2 CONT The 1861 Census gives, living at 248 Netherfield Rd, Everton, someone age 14,
2 CONT born in Suffolk, with a badly-written name that could be Keren or Kerin.
2 CONT This person's widowed mother is Hepzabah (sp?) Andrews, born in Yarmouth.
2 CONT There is a Yarmouth on the I.o.W., as well as the one in Norfolk.
2 CONT Joan Clarke recounts family legend of Carrie coming from Yarmouth or Gt. Yarmouth
2 CONT (and that perhaps she had a brother Peter who had a boat...?).
2 CONT Diana Clarke reports her mother Laura as saying Hampshire. Keren Andrews
2 CONT also has a brother, probably called Wm., age 17 on the same census, and an
2 CONT uncle, William Goffin, age 38, mariner. There are many records of
2 CONT the Goffin family in Suffolk and Norfolk in the IGI [often with reference
2 CONT to a relative or relatives called John Powell - probably a modern Mormon],
2 CONT but no record of a William born circa 1823 (but see the notes for Wm Goffin).

2 CONT Kerenhappuch Andrews was born in Bramfield.
2 CONT Her birth certificate names her father, John Andrews,
2 CONT veterinarian, and her mother, Hepsa Andrews, formerly Goffin.
2 CONT The name Kerenhappuch is biblical (Job 42:14) - she was one of
2 CONT the three daughters of Job, the others being Jemima (Dove or Turtledove) and
2 CONT Keziah (Cassia or Cinnamon). Kerenhappuch means "Horn of Eye Paint" or Mascara Pot!

2 CONT The village of Bramfield is within the Hundred of Blything, about 2 miles from
2 CONT Halesworth and about 20 from Gt. Yarmouth. In 1844 (White's Directory) there were
2 CONT two veterinary surgeons working in Bramfield, both called Jno. Andrews. The IGI
2 CONT lists the marriage of Kepsa [sic] Goffin and John Andrews in Gt Yarmouth in 1833.

2 CONT All this seems enough corroboration to identify Carrie and Kerenhappuch,
2 CONT although it leaves the reference to Hampshire unexplained.

2 CONT Kerenhappuch seems to be a Crisp - Hepsa's mother's family - family name.

2 CONT The death of a Carrie McCulloch, age 76, was registered in West Derby
2 CONT in the first quarter of 1924. She was buried on 14th January with three

2 CONT Gavin lived at 2 Augustine St as an Engine Smith (from Gores Directory,
2 CONT 1853) and later at 27 Nursery St as Engineer (Gores Directory, 1859, in which

2 CONT He is described as John McCulloch, age 53, Engineer, in the 1861 Census.
2 CONT He is described as Gavin McCulloch, an Engineer, on Robert's marriage certificate

2 CONT His final appearance in Gores Directory was in 1878,
2 CONT when he was described as an Engine Fitter - still living at 27 Nursery St.
2 CONT His death was registered on the 20th March 1878, at Liverpool, age 71, by

2 CONT I looked in the Anfield Cemetery register for the first quarter of 1878
2 CONT and didn't find him. Maybe he just scraped into the second quarter burials,
2 CONT or he's buried somewhere else. A quick look at Everton Necropolis burials failed
2 CONT to show anything, either.

2 CONT and a son John, shipwright, age 28, unmarried, also born Liverpool.
2 CONT Could this Elizabeth be Mary Stewarts's relative?

2 CONT Another possible Stewart connection is with Robert Stewart, who was Provost of
2 CONT Glasgow between 1851 and 1854. There's a family tradition (JC) that a cousin
2 CONT of Robert Vance McCulloch's was Provost of Glasgow. Of course, without finding
2 CONT all of the marriages of all of Robert's female relatives, it's impossible to
2 CONT be sure that none of the other Provosts named aren't the one. I haven't found
2 CONT a McCulloch provost, though (KC).
2 CONT Robert Stewart is mentioned briefly in Rambles Round Glasgow - he was provost
2 CONT when the city council bought Kelvingrove Park (by the University) to create a
2 CONT public open space.

2 CONT There are many inscriptions to members of the Tassie family in Glasgow area
2 CONT churchyards. One of them mentions William and Jas. Tassie, about whom
2 CONT a biography was written in the 19th century. We don't know what the connection
2 CONT was. A John Tassie, son of John Tassie and Mary Beith, was born in Gorbals
2 CONT on 4th Oct 1808 - a contemporary of Gavin Lennox McCulloch. A John Tassie
2 CONT was also made a Burgess of Glasgow in 1769, so he (perhaps the JT who married
2 CONT Mary Beith? A bit old perhaps.) would have been a contemporary of the original
2 CONT Gavin Lennox, who was also a Burgess.

2 CONT Samuel McCulloch and Gavin Lennox. Gavin's parents were Francis McCulloch
2 CONT occupation Smith, and Kathrane McCalla. Gavin Lennox was the husband of
2 CONT Elizabeth McCulloch, and was made a Burgess of Glasgow (as as Merchant) through being the
2 CONT son-in-law of a Samuel McCulloch (Barber and Burgess). This Samuel seems
2 CONT to have had two sons made Burgesses: William and Samuel.
2 CONT No Francis or Gavin McCullochs were ever made Burgess, but perhaps Francis
2 CONT was a younger son? If the Barbers' Guild were really Surgeons, then the
2 CONT illegible scribble on Gavin McCulloch's marriage entry might say Surjn., not Soldr. -
2 CONT but there doesn't seem to be a letter with a downstroke.
