0.8 (June 2006)
This version is the same as 0.8b4 except only that it will not expire. It is a PowerPC application that will run on Intel Macintoshes using Apple's Rosetta emulation.
0.8b4 (December 2005)
- fixed problem where } and { characters in notes etc led to corrupt RTF files
on export (e.g. dragging Preview/Word icon to the desktop).

in some circumstances when merging two or more documents which use the same
GEDCOM xref values for different people
- printing enabled for Help window
- Copy and Select All commands are now available for the Help window without your
having to click in it first

recently, or who you worked on last Christmas, etc
- better behaviour when closing a biog window with an open edit box
- better behavour when selecting another window or application when there's a
biog window with an open edit box
- tree window vertical scrollbar now works correctly when root of the tree is a
person with multiple marriages
- the To Do list now shows only people in the current group (those who have
_TODO lines)
- the To Do list now shows CONC as well as CONT lines associated with each
_TODO line
- improved performance when working with large selections (thousands of people)
in group windows
- fixed bug which prevented the correct saving of documents following use of the
Print command
- fixed bug which disabled checks for valid entry in GEDCOM fields following use
of the Print command
- fixed a possible crash when using the limited-number-of-generations feature
of tree windows
- fixed a possible crash when deleting a person from the document ("Clear" command)
- fixed a possible crash when after clicking the "Save" button on the dialog
presented when closing a document with unsaved changes

recorded as their own ancester in the GEDCOM
- expiry date now 30th June 2006
0.8b3 (March 2005)
- fixed minor applescript problem

is made to quit the application, followed by the app putting up
a Review Changes dialog, followed by the user creating a new
document during the review
- expiry date is now end of December, 2005.
0.8b2 (August 2004)
- faster execution of AppleScript command "remove people from group"
and of the Edit menu's Clear command when applied to a selection
of a large number of people in a sub-group window.
- much faster execution of AppleScript expressions such as
every person of document 1 whose full name contains "Beryl"
- new AppleScript class 'source' for SOUR records
- new properties for 'person' class (INDI records)
- new sample scripts
- view unrelated groups
- export GEDCOM for MyRoots (PalmOS s/w)
- born on this day
- born since 1900
- ends of my lines
- new options for the 'export' AppleScript command:
- export group -- the group to export
into alias -- Destination folder
[as web site/RTF/GEDCOM] -- the kind of export - default GEDCOM
[without notes for a list of person] -- list of people whose NOTEs shou
ld be omitted
[without children for a list of person] -- list of people whose children
should NOT be listed in their family groups
[without mentioning a list of person] -- list of people who should NOT be l
isted in their parents' family groups
[with email addresses obscure/clear] -- obscure (the default) or clear text em
ail addresses in exported NOTE and URL fields
- much faster Add Ancestors To Group and similar commands
- much faster Add Ancestors To Group and similar commands
- Add Spouses now adds the other spouses of the spouses, and so on
(is this nice?)
- fixed odd "bold" drawing of footnotes on X
- fixed some space leaks
- fix for source note space leak
- fix for leak of OBJE._ALIA.CONC values read in from a gedcom file
- web pages: fixed bug where about 32k characters into a long surname
index, an accented or other non-ASCII MacRoman character would be
incorrectly translated to UTF-8
- web pages: better handling of GEDCOMs which capitalise surnames
inconsistently
- generated biography web pages are HTML 4.01 transitional compliant
- generated surname web pages are HTML 4.01 t. compliant
- command-clicking URLs now always opens the URL, rather than extending
or shrinking the selection. It changes the selection to the URL that
you click on - I'm not really happy with this -
should it be, say, alt-command-click?
- command-' now opens selected URLs (previously it opened all URLs)
- expiry date now 31 Mar 2005
- outstanding problems:
dragging large numbers of people to group windows v slow
pasting notes onto source citations in FAM records not enabled
generated index.html still not HTML 4.01 transitional compliant
the 'without' options for HTML export and obscured email addresses are
not done for GEDCOM exports
0.8b1 (April 2004)
- Saved preferences in 0.8b1 aren't backwards compatible with 0.7b5.
If you have a problem, delete the SeeGEDCOM preferences file from
your (personal) Library folder.
- Fixed bug where, in a biog window that shows a picture, footnotes
would have unnecessarily short lines.
- HTML export (see separate document)
- Clearer treatment of source citations - it's no longer possible to
get a blank citation. There's a longer description of Sources, citations
and footnotes in the Help menu, provided you're running at least 10.1.5.
If you're not, see the README.
- Expanded AppleScript support with more commands:
duplicate, move and delete GEDCOM lines;
delete people from document; add spouses to group, add ancestors to group,
add descendants to group, add list of people to group, remove people from group;
export group into folder as web site, to file as rtf, to file as gedcom;
regroup group members by birth date, etc.
- Also more AppleScript properties for persons:
birth year (number), estimated birth year (number)
- Example AppleScript to "fix" GEDCOMs exported from Reunion (Mac)
or Generations (Windows)
- Translucent dragging of export icons, icons match user's default app
for .rtf, .html, .ged, .pict (only when running on 10.2.8 or later)
- Progress dialogs during long exports
- The Clear command in the index window is no longer (incorrectly) available
for read-only documents
- Translucent dragging of text selections from biog windows (10.2.8 or later)
0.7b5 (January 2004)
- The pop-up menu in the biog tool bar may be used to choose between type-select
('browser') and type-to-edit-selection ('editor')
(done in 0.7b4, but not documented)
- Clicking outside an editing field in a biog window no longer scrolls back
to the top.
- Will and Probate records are now displayed even in the absence of birth,
baptism and death records for that person
- Adding a person to an un-grouped group window was switching the group to
the last kind of grouping used, without changing the pop-up; e.g. if the
user chose Group By Marriage Place, then chose Don't Group, then dragged
another person into the group view, it would switch back to grouping by
marriage place, although the pop-up would still read Don't group.
It now respects the user's explicit setting of the pop-up to Don't Group.
- SeeGEDCOMX now implements the standard behaviour of CONT lines, treating
them as hard line endings.
- There is a new "paragraph fill" button in the biog window toolbar.
When a note, address, or quoted text (any multi-line value) is selected,
this button will remove most hard line endings, while keeping hard line
endings for blank lines & indented lines.
- The example "McCulloch" GEDCOM file uses CONC lines rather than CONT
lines in notes, wherever line breaks aren't wanted.
- It's still NOT possible to edit out-of-line notes.
- Separate counters are now used for INDI, FAM, SOUR records. Previously
there was a single counter, so that the sequences of cross-reference
values would have
gaps in them. Most people shouldn't care about this one way or the other.
- Fixed a bug in check for out-of-memory problems; this is most important
when running on MacOS 8.x or 9.x. You can now expect to see a dialog box
warning when memory is low - if you see it, use Save As to save a copy of
your work.
SeeGEDCOMX History
0.7b4 (December 2003)
- This version fixes many usability bugs in 0.7b3, and one nasty crashing
bug. Copy and pasting of events and event detail has been improved.
If you're doing a lot of editing, you're still advised to save your work
frequently. I've tried to stick to "no brainer" fixes this time.
- Fixed crashes which could occur when using the "back" or "forward" buttons
in the biography window tool bar.
- There are a lot more copy-and-paste possibilities now, especially
pasting over existing events or details to replace them (say pasting a
date over an existing date, or a birth over an existing birth) and
pasting multiple events (say a baptism, birth and burial all in one go -
but not including a marriage, as that would be pasted on a family not a
person). This provides a natural short cut for a New XXX; Edit...; Paste
sequence. By design you can't paste a subrecord (e.g. a DATE onto an
event, e.g. a BIRT) if the BIRT already has a DATE.
- When pasting a source citation, as opposed to a field that contains a
source citation, the cited source is now correctly copied to the
destination and renamed if necessary, along with the citation.
- Copy & Paste are now documented in the built-in Help.
- When a new item of information is added to a Biography window, using
e.g. the Add Info command, it is now selected, highlighted, and if
necessary the window is scrolled to make it visible.
- Punctuation and all labels are now selectable in biography windows, so
the text in the view can all be selected, copied and pasted or dragged
into emails etc.
- New Child use to create a new family when there was no selection, even if
there was exactly one family in the biography - it now adds the child to
the existing family in this situation.
- Source citations no longer incorrectly merge footnotes when there are
multiple citations of the same source with a note or page but no quoted
text.
- Source citations no longer use the wrong footnote number when there
are citations with notes, pages, or quoted text and multiple citations
with none of these in the same biog.
- You can now add certainty assessments (QUAY) to source citations. It
needs a pop-up menu, but doesn't yet have one.
- Source records can now be attached to a family (FAM) record and such
records are correctly displayed. To provide a target for the menu
commands, it's necessary to sometimes display a "Family" paragraph
heading when it would be prettier to leave it out.
- Source citations can be pasted onto families if one of the Family,
Wife, Husband or Children paragraph headings is shown, to act as the
target.
- Paragraph breaks in long Notes in RTF reports are now respected.
- Drag receive highlighting is now removed in a biography window after a
drop.
- Multimedia (OBJE) records are now longer reported as uninterpreted in
RTF reports.
- On MacOS X 10.1.5 or later the help window is now shown with same font &
style as the default for Biography windows, anti-aliased.
- When someone is removed from the document using the index view, any
tree view that contains them is automatically redrawn.
- Dragging a previously unselected person from a index table used to
open that person's biog window, because it changed the selection. Ditto
for creating a new person. Dragging still changes the selection, but no
longer updates other open windows.
- Surname grouping in index window is REALLY now case insensitive.
- View->Family Tree now longer unnecessarily opens new windows for
multiple selections when Use A Single Window is the preference.
- Biography views containing more information than will fit in the
window no longer scroll away from the part of the biography that you're
focussed on when you close an editing box, delete something, add
something or resize the window.
- There are now contextual (control-click or right-click) menus in a
biography page of group window.
- You can now delete notes from a biography when they're stored
out-of-line as level 0 records. Clear or delete removes the reference
to the note from the person's own information (INDI) or familyh (FAM)
record, but leaves it in the document. A later version will remove all
notes that are no longer referred to from the document.
- Changing someone's sex already correctly set their WIFE vs. HUSB role
in any family to which they belonged. Now undoing (Edit->Undo) the sex
change restores this role.
Release Notes for v0.7b3
- Accented characters (Mac Roman) can now be used
- Case insensitive sorting and grouping in group views.
- "Group By" menu in group views now includes "Census Place" for better
display of GEDCOMS downloaded from www.familysearch.org using
(!) census searches. Grouping uses the first census line
when the person has more than one.
A future version will do something better.
- You can now copy&paste people's birth, death, census etc data,
even from other GEDCOM documents. When copying from another document
(e.g. that download from familysearch.org that you did earlier)
"level 0" source, note records etc are also copied.
If the receiving GEDCOM document already has an
identical source (note...) then the copied information is changed
to use the existing source record.
- You can copy and paste SOURce information, e.g. from a FAMily record
obtained from an LDS Vital Records CD to a MARRiage record in your
own GEDCOM document. Select "Source" in a footnote, and choose Copy
from the Edit menu; then select e.g. "Marriage" in another window,
and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
- There's an Add Info menu command for adding Note and Source fields to
all major event types (Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial, etc)
- the Edit... menu command now shows the kind of information in the
selection, so it reads for example Edit Place... or Edit Name... etc.
Edits of most values - those that fit in a single line - can be
confirmed using the Return key as well as by clicking outside the box.
- Date and time of last update to an individual or family record is
now stored and displayed.
- Reference values - arbitrary labels that you can attach to individuals
and families - are now supported.
- tidied up the various New Thing commands in the never-ending
quest for usability.
The submenus (in the Edit menu) that insert additional information
into an existing individual or family record are
now called Add Family Info/Add Person Info/Add XXXX Info.
Depending on the current selection in the window, XXXX is e.g. Birth,
Death, Census, etc.
- tidied up the behaviour of the commands that add new people
to the GEDCOM document (New Wife/New Husband/New Person/New Child)
so that adding new people is less confusing, particularly
when the 'single biography window' preference is being used
- Undo/Redo now available for the Copy, Cut, Paste, Edit, Add Info and
New Person commands; for raw GEDCOM edits; for drags to subgroup windows;
and for dragging a picture to biography windows.
- "Family Tree" windows are now less dependent on surnames always being
spelled the same way. Surnames are still used so that the children who share
their mother's surname are included, as in earlier versions.
- I now change the cursor in tree views to show more obviously that
the canvas can be dragged around
- Multi-media URL links are now supported. These can be command-clicked
to open the URL in the user's default application for that type.
- GEDCOM documents with .ged or .txt extensions are now
more obviously selectable in Open dialogs
- added support for long (greater than 31 character) file names,
and Unicode file names when running on MacOSX 10.1.5 or newer
- new MacOSX dialog sheets when quitting the application, closing
document windows etc
- removed 32KB limit on RTF and GEDCOM text drags to other applications
- Add Death Info/Add Burial Info submenus no longer include Cause
and Age if the selected Death or Burial already has this information.
- Additional Applescript support and some sample menus for mobile phones
using Salling Clicker.
- The Copy command is now available when the document is read-only.
- Added read-only icon in index group window.
- Group by death year, death place, burial year, burial place
- Improved keyboard navigation in tree views - it now respects "names" starti
ng with / [ < ( ?
- fixed bugs in Applescript support - you can now get the spouses and
children of a person via Applescript
- fixed bug which disabled some of the New Thing commands
inappropriately
- fixed bugs with contextual menus (control-click or right-click menus)
- fixed bug which made tree views draw incorrectly after an RTF
report had been generated
- editing a second (or third...) NAME record now works correctly -
previously it always updated the first NAME record
- Fixed numerous other small bugs.
