COSMOS - a configuable message system for cooperative work

(UK government funded (Alvey) project, 1986-1989). QMW was the lead partner and formulated the system architecture. Our work resulted in the following publications:

  • The Cosmos Laboratory
  • Towards a Language for Defining Structure in Message-Based Cooperative Working,
  • Experiences in Building a Configurable CSCW System

  • Experiences with MacApp in building a user interface for the Cosmos messaging system

  • The Design of an Object Server as a Storage Module for the Cosmos Messaging System

SPIRIT-2 High Performance Workstation (ESPRIT project #2484, 1989-93).

In the distributed systems group at QMW a distributed shared object extension was added to Smalltalk-80 and evaluated in several applications. Our work resulted in the following publications:

  • The Private Access Channel:a security mechanism for shared distributed objects
Jean Dollimore and Wang Xu. Proceedings Tools Europe 93 France. Pages, 211-222, Prentice Hall, March 1993.

  • The Design of a System for Distributing Shared Objects
Dollimore, J., Miranda, E. and Wang Xu, Computer Journal Vol. 34, No. 6, 1991.

  • Fine Grained Object Migration: Model, Mechanisms and Experience
