Entry requirements

Academic Qualifications

For Advanced MSc programmes, you will need a first or upper-second class degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline. We will consider unrelated degrees, if you have evidence of significant relevant industrial experience. We will also consider lower-second class undergraduate degrees, if the degree specialised in the relevant subjects.

For an MSc by Research, you will need a first or good upper-second in your first degree in an appropriate area for the research being undertaken. For instance, a Physics degree would be an acceptable alternative to one in Electronic Engineering for a student wishing to do research in Electromagnetics.

For the MSc Computing and Information Systems, you will need to hold a first degree in a subject not related to computer science, or a degree with less than 50 per cent of the modules in computer science subjects. We require a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree classification, and we normally look for a GPA of greater than 3.2. We also need evidence of mathematical ability equivalent to UK GCSE grade B.

If your degree was awarded at a non-UK University, then the ranking of the University and the degree awarded must be considered equivalent to a good UK University honours degree.

You will also need a Mathematics ability equivalent to a UK GCSE higher tier grade C. We consider University 1st and 2nd year mathematics modules that include basic algebra and geometry to be equivalent.

Please email enquiries-msc@eecs.qmul.ac.uk if you require any further information.

Programming Skills

For all but the conversion MSc, you will need to have a good knowledge of computer programming. To satisfy this requirement, either:

  1. your first degree should have a significant computer science content, including programming using e.g. C/C++ or Java, program design (UML, OMT etc), data structures and computer networks; or
  2. you should have equivalent industrial experience.

English Language Skills

If you are an international student, you will need to have English Language skills to a recognised standard. The minimum requirement is:
IELTS 6.5, TOEFL (CBT) 237, 92 (iBT) or TOEFL (written test) 580.

If you do not quite meet this requirement (e.g. if you have IELTS 6.0), you should consider enrolling on a Pre-sessional English Language course run by the College.

Facilities (Distance Learning only)

If you will be studying by Distance Learning, you will need certain facilities, such as access to a PC with broadband Internet connection. For more details, see the Distance Learning page.
