HNU-QM Cooperative Master Program: “Digital Product and Media Design”

Program outline

This Cooperative Master Program "Digital Product and Media Design", is a collaboration between School of Design, Hunan University and School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary, University of London;

The program is designed for students from Design, Arts and Craft background who want to get into Interactive Design, Interactive Art, Interaction Design, HCI, New Media, Digital Media, Media and Arts Technologies.

If students meet all graduate requirements from both HNU and QM's parts, they would be awarded two masters: M.E/M.FA from HNU and M.Sc from QM.

Study duration and model

Study Time: full-time, 2.5 years:

Year 1: 12 months in HNU (Changsha & Shenzhen)
Year 2: 12 months in QM (London)
Year 3: 6 months in HNU (Changsha & Shenzhen)

After the 1st year study in HNU, students should write a research proposal for their future studies in London; (following HNU's Research Proposal specification & QM's student statement of purpose).

Students must have excellent academic score in HNU Year 1 and achieve IELTS 6.5 minimum to be considered for QM in Year 2. Students with excellent academic score in HNU Year 1 and achieve IELTS 6.0 must take the QM 5 week Pre-Sessional English to be considered for QM in Year 2.

MSc Advanced Placement Project

Graduate works (Advanced Placement Project; 90 credits).
Students will develop a research project usually as a placement within one of QM's research groups in the school of electronic engineering and computer science. We aim for each student to be allocated a supervisor with research expertise linked to the project. Our research groups include: the Centre for Digital Music; Multimedia and Vision; Cognitive Science. Graduate works and thesis should be written in English following QM's requirements.

Year 3 (HNU: thesis)

After graduating from QM, students should complete their HNU thesis in Chinese following HNU's graduate works and thesis guidelines and procedure.

2015 entry timetable

  1. Entry HNU at Sept 2015, and complete all HNU courses from Sept 2015 to May 2016, and get IETS 6.5
  2. Students confirm selection of QM route with HNU Mar 2016
  3. Prepare project report (similar requirements as HNU's research proposal) & presentations/portfolios at June 2016, and submit for both QM & HUN's professors for review and revise if necessary
  4. Prepare passport (suggest to do it before or during winter vacation) and visa from June to August
  5. Travel to UK at the last week of August or the 1st week of Sept 2016, settle down and ready for local enrolment
  6. Take QM taught courses Sep 2016 to April 2017
  7. Start preparation for graduation works in Dec 2016, and provide graduation topic/ plan to both QM and HNU for review.
  8. Graduate works (Advanced Placement Project) April 2017 to Sep 2017
  9. Defence of Advanced Placement Project Sep 2017
  10. Back HNU end Sep 2017, finish HNU defense and thesis in next half year
