Data Analytics (Undergraduate)

This module focuses on the range of approaches, methodologies, techniques and tools for data analysis, and the use of data analysis findings to inform decision-making in an industrial / business context.

Data Analytics (Postgraduate/Undergraduate)

This module focuses on the range of approaches, methodologies, techniques and tools for data analysis, and the use of data analysis findings to inform decision-making in an industrial / business context. It exposes students to a range of industry-standard statistical and data analysis techniques and tools, and fosters awareness of the challenges associated with working with large datasets. The module also covers topics related to the legal, social, ethical and professional issues associated with data storage and analysis. Students will undertake practical work including empirical data analysis and summarisation / presentation of the results to a range of relevant stakeholders.

Database Systems (Postgraduate)

Introduction to databases and their language systems in theory and practice. The main topics covered by the module are: The principles and components of database management systems. The main modelling techniques used in the construction of database systems. Implementation of databases using an object-relational database management system. SQL, the main relational database language. Object-Oriented database systems. Future trends, in particular information retrieval and data warehouses. There are 2 timetabled lectures a week, and 1 hour tutorial per week (though not every week). There will be timetabled laboratory sessions (2 hours a week) for approximately 4 weeks.

Content description: ------- How does the way we feel and express emotional behaviour affect our interaction with technology? What if we could use a ''head nod'' for ''liking'' things on Facebook? Can we create assistive technology to help people suffering from social disorders (e.g., autism)? Affective and Behavioural Computing is a multidisciplinary field of research and practice concerned with these questions, and understanding, recognizing and utilizing human emotions and communicative behaviour in the design of computational systems. ----- The following list aims to clarify the content and provides a representative list of topics: ¿ Overview: affective and behavioural computing; ¿ Theories in psychology, cognitive science and neuroscience: affect, emotion and social signal processing; ¿ Computational models; ¿ Emotion, affect and social signals in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI); ¿ Sensing: vision, audio, bio signals, text; data acquisition and annotation, databases and tools; ¿ Processing: extracting meaningful information and features; ¿ Recognition: applying machine learning techniques; ¿ Programming refresher: Hands-on lecture on programming for affective and behavioural computing using relevant libraries; ¿ Evaluation: automatic analysers, and emotionally and socially intelligent systems; ¿ Affect and social signal expression and generation (virtual characters, robots, etc.); ¿ Affect and social signals for Mobile HCI; ¿ Applications (entertainment technology/gaming/arts; clinical and biomedical studies, e.g., autism, depression, pain; etc.; implicit (multimedia) tagging; affective wearables); ¿ Ethical issues.

Distributed Systems (Postgraduate/Undergraduate)

The Internet interconnects billions of machines, ranging from high end servers to limited capacity embedded sensing devices. Distributed systems are built to take advantage of multiple interconnected machines and achieve common goals with them. The module will cover the fundamental concepts and technical challenges of building distributed systems. The topics will include the characteristics of network communications for applications, application-level communication protocols, the concept of synchronization (implications, role of consistency modes and protocols), as well as the impact of data replication, and options for tolerating failures.

Signals and Systems Theory (Undergraduate)

This module stresses the appreciation and use of certain transform techniques in the analysis of signals, and their related systems. Emphasis is placed on Fourier methods within the context of continuous time signals and signal processing, and the use of linear difference equations and Z transforms when signals are discrete.
