Research Interests

The Whitespace Machine Communication (WMC) Lab, led by Dr Yue Gao, focus on theoretical research and bring them into practice in the interdisciplinary area among antennas, signal processing, spectrum sharing and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. The WMC Lab currently has:

  • Live connections to Geo-location databases
  • Compressive spectrum sensing testbed
  • Live spectrum monitoring system from 10 MHz to 6 GHz running 24/7
  • TV white space spectrum (470-790 MHz) licence issued by Ofcom
  • TV white space system testbed with base stations and terminals

White space is the name given to parts of spectrum that are unused in a particular location and at a particular time. TV white spaces exist between airwaves primarily used for digital terrestrial TV broadcasting (470 MHz to 790 MHz). With the TV white space spectrum operating licence granted by the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, the WMC Lab recently works on spectrum sharing and cognitive radio theory, and bring them into real-time testbeds and live demonstrations, especially in the following areas:

  • UHF, UWB antennas, Characteristic Modes
  • MIMO, Massive MIMO, mm-wave antennas, OAM
  • Sub-Nyquist sampling, compressive sensing, s-FFT, multi-coset
  • Smart wireless system design and integration
